DuBose Law Firm, PLLC wants its neighbors in Dallas and the legal community to know what it’s doing to protect the environment and reduce solid waste.

Founding member and attorney Ben K. DuBose has fought for a better environment for over a decade by representing asbestos mesothelioma victims in jurisdictions across the country. Now, DuBose Law Firm, PLLC is taking its commitment to the environment to another level by creating a plan to reduce the law firm’s impact on the environment.

Attorney’s are tree killers – a 2006 study of law firms across the country found that annual paper use can reach 100,000 sheets per attorney – the equivalent of a half-ton of paper use per attorney per year. The life-cycle of a ton of paper, from production to recycling, results in the generation of about 9 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) – equivalent greenhouse gas emissions. 

A fundamental part of DuBose Law Firm’s commitment to the environment includes participation in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) innovative WasteWise program, the country’s first national voluntary solid waste reduction program.  WasteWise encourages organizations to reduce municipal solid waste through waste prevention, recycling, and buying or manufacturing recycled products. WasteWise partners have saved thousands, even millions of dollars in purchasing costs and waste disposal fees by reducing, reusing, and recycling solid waste materials.

As a WasteWise member, we are required to establish three new waste prevention activities, expand or improve our current recycling efforts, and purchase and/or manufacture additional products with recycled content.  A major thrust of WasteWise is waste prevention—actions that minimize or eliminate the generation of waste before it is created—with the goal of decreasing the amount of material that must be recycled or thrown away.

According to Ben DuBose, “through WasteWise we will reduce our solid waste and carbon footprint by using practices which all law firms and organizations should adopt – it’s easy and good for the planet. Participation in WasteWise will help us reduce costs and demonstrate DuBose Law Firm PLLC’s commitment to preserve natural resources and protect the environment.”

The WasteWise program has a broad and varied membership that reflects the makeup of corporate America.  More than 1,100 organizations have joined WasteWise since 1994, demonstrating their leadership in finding cost-effective ways to reduce waste.  WasteWise partners include many of the country’s leading manufacturers, retailers, and service firms, spanning more than 50 different industry sectors. The program also services federal, state and local governments, tribes, and other non-corporate institutions.

Recently, the American Bar Association (ABA), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created the ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge to encourage law offices to take specific steps to conserve energy, resources and reduce emissions of green house gases and other polluntants by following simple practices advocated by the WasteWise program.
